iKid: Theme / Custom Track
I Kid with Brad Garrett is a American TV show starring actor-comedian Brad Garrett. The show premiered on Tuesday June 28, 2011 and ran for 12 episodes. The host Brad Garrett gets children’s responses to odd questions and situations. Their reactions are usually funny and cute but sometimes a little awkward.
We supplied the Theme, catalog and some custom music production.
We were all just having a conversation, talking about some of the interesting projects we’ve been a part of in the past. We call it “archives”. One in particular came up in the conversation which was a first for us and quite unique.
About a year ago, we were called in to a meeting, as we were the resident “autotune specialists” according to the person who referred us (insert smirk). Autotune is now practically a household name when it comes to pitch correction. We use it (and other 3rd party tools) to fine-tune some of the vocal tracks we record. This process usually involved getting into the track and almost surgically drawing in the targeted notes.
This request was a little different!
For TLC’s “iKid” with host Brad Garrett, they wanted to take some of the footage and make a song using the audio dialogue elements. This was a family based show, and a mix of ‘Kids Say the Darndest Things’ and ‘America’s Funniest Home Videos’. A lot of the audio footage had conversations of bugs, boogers and gassy body parts, as expected.
We received an OMF file of all the mics to go through. We grabbed our favorite dialogue and locked it to the click. We then started to build the track. For the track, there were so many direction to choose. We ended up going with teen pop direction.
We then performed the autotune portion which would give the song it’s melody. We even went as far to add background harmonies and other vocal elements to keep the track interesting. The real challenge was getting the message of the track to translate to a first-time listener. Here’s a screen shot of some mix elements.
A couple of days later, we were happy and so was the production company. Check it out!
